This term refers to a person taking charge of their own life and their economic, professional, family, and social future. The word appeared in the early 20th century in the context of feminist activism. It has since been used in talking about all major social conflicts, like the Civil Rights Movement for Black Americans and decolonisation. Today, empowerment is a key idea in policies for development and participatory democratic processes. Empowerment involves a sharing of power and information in order to break out of top-down systems within organisations.
