In Istanbul, top up your transport pass by recycling plastic bottles

In Istanbul, top up your transport pass by recycling plastic bottles

How do you make it common practice to be more eco-friendly? The city of Istanbul has for the past six months been using a novel and educational solution to promote cleaner streets and recycling.

In partnership with local company Isbak, the city council has installed reverse vending machines in all metro stations, which users can feed with empty plastic bottles and drinks cans to add credit to their transport passes.

Users will need to stay motivated to amass enough credit for a free journey – no fewer than 28 bottles are needed. But the initiative is mainly an exercise in teaching long-term habits and the mayor’s office is not ruling out other reward schemes such as entry to theatres.

Already deployed in Peking and in Surabaya, Indonesia, and even in Sydney, Australia, this technology could be one astute way for France to finance free public transport. Just the kind of social, eco-minded measure that is increasingly sought by users.
